Living in Walden, NY: What Home Buyers Should Know

by Ammar Iqbal

The Village of Walden is a friendly small village in the Town of Montgomery, right along the Wallkill River. It offers a real downtown, a range of home styles and quick access to major roads. Here is what home buyers should know. For more on the surrounding area, see my Montgomery, NY neighborhood guide, which covers Walden too.

A village with a main street

Walden is one of three villages in the Town of Montgomery, along with Montgomery and Maybrook. Its downtown has local restaurants, cafes and shops, and the village hosts community events through the year. If you like being able to walk to a coffee shop or a park, village living here can be a great fit.

River views and local favorites

The Wallkill River flows right through Walden, and it is a favorite for fishing, kayaking and riverside walks. Walden is also home to a well-known cider house, and farm stands and orchards are close by in the fall. Walden has a long history as a manufacturing village, which you can still see in its older buildings and homes.

Types of homes you will find

Walden's housing is varied:

  • Older and historic homes near the village center
  • Capes, colonials and ranches on village streets
  • Multi-family homes that can help with a mortgage
  • More space and newer homes just outside the village in the town

Homes inside the village often have public water and sewer, while homes outside may use a well and septic. Older homes deserve a careful look, so review my Orange County home inspection checklist. When you are ready, browse Walden homes for sale or compare homes in the Town of Montgomery.

Schools

Walden is served by the Valley Central School District. Always confirm the district for the exact address you are considering.

Taxes and budgeting
