Highland Mills is a quiet hamlet in the Town of Woodbury in Orange County, NY. It sits right off Route 32 and close to Interstate 87, so it's easy to get around. Here are some of the best things to do if you live here or are thinking about moving.

Hike Schunnemunk Mountain

Schunnemunk Mountain rises along the western side of the town. It's one of the most popular hikes in the area, with rocky ridges and wide views of the Hudson Valley. Many hikers start from Gonzaga Park near Highland Mills and follow the yellow-blazed Jessup Trail up to the ridge. Wear sturdy shoes, since parts of the trail are steep and rocky.

Visit a Local Vineyard

Palaia Vineyards sits on Route 32 at the north end of town, on the old Sweet Clover Farm property. It's a relaxed spot for a glass of wine, live music and time outdoors with friends.

Shop at Woodbury Common

Woodbury Common Premium Outlets is just down the road in nearby Central Valley. It's one of the largest outlet centers in the world, with hundreds of stores. Locals know to go on weekday mornings to avoid the crowds.

Enjoy Lakes Nearby

Small lakes like Cromwell Lake and Coronet Lake are part of the area's scenery. For more lakes and parks, the Monroe area is a short drive away. See my list of things to do in Monroe, NY.

The Woodbury area has a long history of flour mills, tanneries and even fly rod making. The Woodbury Historical Society shares stories and photos of the town's past and is a great way to learn about your new community.
