New Windsor sits along the Hudson River just south of Newburgh. It is packed with Revolutionary War history, riverfront parks and easy access to Route 32, Route 300, I-87 and I-84. Here are some favorite things to do for residents and visitors. For a full look at the town, see my New Windsor, NY neighborhood guide.

Walk through history at the New Windsor Cantonment

The New Windsor Cantonment State Historic Site marks where the Continental Army spent its final winter encampment of the Revolutionary War. It hosts reenactments, demonstrations and special events, and it is a great outing for families and history fans.

Visit the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor

Right next to the Cantonment on Route 300, the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor honors service members who were wounded or killed in combat. It is a meaningful stop and a source of local pride.

See Knox's Headquarters

Near Vails Gate, Knox's Headquarters State Historic Site is a stone house that served as a headquarters for Continental Army generals, including Henry Knox. It is a quiet, scenic spot to learn more about the area's role in the war.

Enjoy the Hudson at Plum Point

The Kowawese Unique Area at Plum Point is a riverfront park with wide views of Newburgh Bay and the Hudson Highlands. It is a popular place for walking, picnics, launching a kayak and watching the sunset over the river.
