Living in Port Jervis, NY: What Home Buyers Should Know
By Ammar Iqbal | Real Estate Salesperson, eXp Realty
Port Jervis is a small city where New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania meet, along the Delaware and Neversink Rivers. It has railroad history, mountain views, great outdoor recreation and a train line toward New York City. Here is what home buyers should know. For a full overview, see my Port Jervis, NY neighborhood guide.
A river city with railroad roots
Port Jervis grew up as a railroad town, and you can still see that history downtown, including the historic Erie Railroad depot. Today the city has local restaurants, shops and parks. Hike up to Point Peter for views over the city, and in summer the Delaware River is a favorite for rafting, tubing, kayaking and fishing. Just north of town, Route 97 and the Hawk's Nest offer one of the most famous scenic drives in New York.
Types of homes you will find
Port Jervis homes are often among the more affordable in Orange County. You will find:
- Older and Victorian-era homes with lots of character
- Capes, colonials and ranches on city streets
- Two-family and multi-family homes that can help with a mortgage
- More land and space in the surrounding towns
Homes in the city usually have public water and sewer, while homes outside the city may use a well and septic. Older homes deserve a careful look, so review my Orange County home inspection checklist. When you are ready, browse Port Jervis homes for sale.
Schools
The city and surrounding area are served by the Port Jervis City School District. School zones can vary by street, so always confirm the district for the exact address you are considering.
Getting around
Port Jervis is the end of Metro-North's Port Jervis Line, with service toward New York City. I-84 runs right by the city, and Routes 6 and 209 connect you to nearby towns. The Poconos and northern New Jersey are only minutes away. If you are coming from the city, my guide to moving from NYC to Orange County can help.
Budgeting for your move
Lower prices can make Port Jervis a smart choice for first-time buyers and investors. To plan ahead, read how much house you can afford in Orange County and learn about closing costs in Orange County.
