Living in Tuxedo Park, NY: What Home Buyers Should Know
By Ammar Iqbal | Real Estate Salesperson, eXp Realty
Tuxedo Park is one of the most unique places to live in Orange County. It is a small, private, historic village in the Town of Tuxedo, surrounded by lakes, wooded hills and state parkland, with a train station nearby for trips to New York City. Here is what home buyers should know. For a full overview, see my Tuxedo Park, NY neighborhood guide.
A historic, private village
Tuxedo Park was founded in the 1880s as a private retreat for wealthy New York families, and it is often credited as the namesake of the tuxedo dinner jacket. The village is gated, and many of its roads wind past Tuxedo Lake and grand homes from the Gilded Age. Life here is quiet and wooded, so it appeals to buyers who want privacy and nature more than a busy downtown.
Types of homes you will find
Homes in Tuxedo Park are very different from a typical subdivision. You will find:
- Historic estates and stone mansions
- Shingle-style and older homes with lots of character
- Lakefront and lake-view properties
- More modest single-family homes in the surrounding Town of Tuxedo
Many homes are older and large, so a careful inspection is a must. My Orange County home inspection checklist is a good place to start. Some homes in historic areas may also have rules about exterior changes, so ask before you plan big projects. When you are ready, browse Tuxedo Park homes for sale.
Parks and the outdoors
Tuxedo Park sits next to some of the best open space in the region. Harriman State Park and Sterling Forest State Park offer miles of hiking trails, lakes and scenic views. In late summer, the New York Renaissance Faire runs nearby. For more ideas across the county, see my guide to things to do in Orange County.
Schools
The area is served by the Tuxedo Union Free School District. School zones can vary by street, so always confirm the district for the exact address you are considering.
Getting around
Tuxedo station is on Metro-North's Port Jervis Line, and Route 17 and the New York State Thruway (I-87) are close by. That makes Tuxedo Park one of the closer Orange County spots to New York City. If you are coming from the city, read my guide to moving from NYC to Orange County.
