Blooming Grove is a quiet town in central Orange County, but there is more to do here than many people expect. From mountain hikes to a historic winery and lake neighborhoods, here are some favorite ways residents spend their free time. For a full overview of the town, visit my Blooming Grove, NY neighborhood guide.

Hike Schunnemunk Mountain

Schunnemunk Mountain, the highest mountain in Orange County, rises along the town's eastern edge. Much of the ridge is protected as Schunnemunk Mountain State Park, and its rocky trails reward hikers with wide views of the Hudson Highlands. It is a challenging hike in spots, so wear good shoes and bring water.

See the Moodna Viaduct

In the hamlet of Salisbury Mills, the Moodna Viaduct carries trains high above the Moodna Creek valley. This tall iron railroad trestle is a well-known local landmark and a favorite photo spot, especially when the leaves change in the fall.

Visit Brotherhood Winery

Brotherhood Winery in the Village of Washingtonville, which sits inside the Town of Blooming Grove, is known as one of America's oldest wineries, dating back to 1839. Tastings, tours and seasonal events make it a popular stop for residents and visitors. See more village ideas in my post on things to do in Washingtonville.

Join town recreation programs

The Blooming Grove Recreation Department runs programs at Lasser Park on Station Road in Salisbury Mills. Families can find summer camp, youth sports, a softball league and activities for seniors, so it is an easy way to meet neighbors after a move.

Enjoy lake life

Beaver Dam Lake is a residential lake community that stretches across parts of Blooming Grove, New Windsor and Cornwall. In the summer you will see kayaks and small boats on the water. Lake rules and access vary, so ask about them if you are looking at a home near the lake.

Easy day trips

Storm King Art Center, the Hudson River in Cornwall, and the outlets at Woodbury Common are all a short drive away. The Salisbury Mills-Cornwall Metro-North station also makes it easy to head to the city for the day. Learn more in my guide to living in Blooming Grove.
